BDC also puts the crank pin on the correct side the bearing ID, in the sense that the clearance will be toward the cap.

Measuring is best, meaning measure the OD of the crank pin with a micrometer and the ID of the torqued bearing with a suitable measuring device. Calculate your clearance.

Plastigage is a nice check for added thoroughness.

If the person does not have an accomplished hand at measuring, they can have greater error in that method, which is no good, either. It takes a LOT of practice to be a highly accurate measurer, particuarly out to the fourth place, and that is your goal in this task.

Pick the same journal and measure it ten times. Don't cheat. See if you get the same measurement every time. Then try the ID. That will be harder. If you have a dial bore gauge, that would help a lot, but most folks don't.
