Hi Robert:

It would probably be easier to take a rubbing, or a photo, of the frame rail V.I.N and present that to the DMV in order to get a title with the proper info on it.

Frame rails are here to stay, while engines, as you have found in your case, can come and go.

This advice is only valid, of course, depending on the the type and amount of mood-enhancers that the DMV inmates have enjoyed the morning you attempt this. Often, a local law enforcement officer can inspect your truck, and attest to the accuracy of the V.I.N. info, on a form designed for that purpose. Then you present the form, and get a new title.

My title had the engine number (a correct, original one) but being the hard-headed Kraut that I am, I wanted the V.I.N to be the controlling number, so I unscrewed the data plate, Xeroxed it, and took the photocopy to the DMV. They nearly soiled themselves when I showed them the photocopy. (Something about it's a felony to remove a data plate.)

But I got my new title and reg with the V.I.N. and now I am happy and content, and life is good.

APB
