I know two guys with hydronic systems. One has a very large shop and a modest house both hydronically heated off a waste-oil burner that's in its own shed. The other is in the process of building a home with hydronic heat. Neither of them uses anti-freeze, and both are in places where 20 below is possible and zero is likely. I guess if you plan to be home all the time and you have multiple sources of heat, that's probably safe, but I'm glad to know one can use glycol in the system because that's what I'd want to do. The chance of it freezing up is slim, but it has to be REALLY hard to fix breaks in tubing entombed in concrete.
