I've been told, but have not tried it, that used motor oil sprayed all over the underside of the vehicle once a year in the fall does a better job of rustproofing cheaper than any undercoating compound. According to whoever told me, that's what "everybody" uses in Minnesota (or was it Manitoba). What you are describing (wax/oil) is basically cosmoline. You would basically mix, while hot, straight mineral oil with beeswax and enough mineral spirits to make it sprayable. I've had enough "fun" removing cosmoline from various NOS parts that I don't think I'd want to deliberately put it on anything.
