When towing or hauling heavy loads, the overdrive should be turned off. Very few remember to do that. The 46RE was a marginal barely adequate transmission for a Cummins, but suitable for the gas motor that Mark has. He still needs to check out the obvious first and make sure that his speedometer sensor is the correct one for his tire size. The computer uses the speed/rpm equasion to set perameters of both the engine and the transmission, if the computer is being fooled by the tire size, then the trans is shifting at the wrong points points or shifting improperly and that is causing a heat build-up under certain conditions.
