I work as a career firefighter and have seen an evolution that is destroying the effectiveness of departments everywhere. Older, experienced firefighters are retiring and being replaced with over- educated, inexperienced men with fire science degrees. These people, because of their education are becoming captains and chiefs. New procedures are being created where none are needed. New (not better)technology with regards to equipment is being incorporated. Common sense goes by the wayside and incidents are commanded from behind a textbook (ie, the locked door on the extrication alarm.) Power Wagons are a great thing in the Fire Service. If the Chiefs all had one, the fire would be out before their arrival.
