Its a 46RE and you should have a tranny cooler with it already. The 46RE has several electronic parts that talk to the computer tell it whats going on. I'd figure out your check engine light first! Overdrive locked out and convertor not locked in is OD OFF which is what you want when pulling. Shouldnt be any extra heat generated when both those happen.
Your temp sensor could still be the problem but it could be a slipping transmission being caused by some parts about to fail or one of the electronic parts.
How is your throttle pressure cable doing? Has it stretched? Is the tranny shifting soft and fast into high gear?
