I've seen only steel originals, but they certainly were soft mild steel. This is specifically designed to be the weak link in the winch drive train to avoid the mechanism wrecking itself. I certainly wouldn't use a full strength high tensile bolt without watching the stress I put on the winch unit.
hasn't VPW got originals or proper replacements?
