I think you have the contacts messed up on the blackout switch. Do you have the rotary type, or the push pull type of black out switch? In 1945, you should have the rotary type. All colors go from their respective origins to their destinations, without changing colors. It sounds like you have your blackout stoplight hooked up to your running lights switch. Not a bad idea, since you only have one tail light if hooked up correctly.
