I rebuilt the transfer in my '63 W300 about 10 years ago, and with petroleum 80W90 in it I couldn't keep my hand on it for more than about a second. I switched to synthetic and can now keep a hand on it for about 3-4 seconds after a 75MPH run from LA to SF. Not very quantitative, but sounds similar to your experience. I'm interested in your measurement results.
