The only problem with the alkyd coatings is they are applied at much thinner thickness and the other coatings have far superior chemical and abrasion resistance, as for chips the coating system is fully repairable by simple roughing up the surafce and applying more coating, there are even much better coatings systems than I have stated but require specialized equipment to apply them, a couple are one a Hybrid urethane whicah can be applied at up to an 1/8" thick and the other being thermal applied plastics, there is also a thermal applied metalizing which can be performed, these are all very expensive as the equipment is very expensive to apply these coatings, I personally apply these types of systems for corrosion prevention for constant immersion service tank linings.
