Take a rod and weld on a flat tip like the distributor end on it. Put it into the block hole when the dist. would be until it engage the oil pump drive. Chuck the rod into a drill(the heavier duty the better) and turn the rod. Spin the rod in the direction the rotor would turn if the dist were installed. For the 230, I believe this is clockwise but don't hold me to this. If you go the wrong way- no harm done you just won't get oil pressure and there will be little or no resistance on the rod when it turns.

Also my experience has shown that new 230's need the oil pump primed from above to develop oil pressure. [This is not in any manual] To prime it, first, remove the line fitting connecting the oil galley to the oil pressure sending unit, second, loosen the oil pressure sender unit bracket screw so you can wiggle the bracket up with sender and/or remove the sending unit. Third, pour about 3 oz of 10w30 oil down the metal oil pressure pipe going from the oil. Do it slowly b/c it will bubble alot since the galley is dry and full of air. Keep adding more until the line won't take any more.
Fourth, pull all spark plugs to reduce engine fruction when spinning it. Fifth, spray thin oil into cylinders - not to much! Spin engine by hand and listen for gurgling sounds from oil pump. Sixth, add more oil down oil line to replenish that went into oil pump. Seventh, DO NOT STARE DOWN LINE LINE AFTER A TINY BIT OF OIL PUMPS OUT - it will blast you (I did't care - I was so happy to get oil pressure:) Eight, install oil pressure sender. Nine, spin engine using starter motor to prime engine and blow out oil from cylinders. And Finally, reinstall spark plags and listen the the engine run( hopefully - but that's another matter).

Good luck.
