FYI as a guy who built and owned an off-road tow
service, here is my take on winches:
PTO: The top winch in all categories as long as
your engine runs. Get one rated at least
1.5 time the weight of the truck as a 5,000 lb.
truck in 2' of mud with the punkins stuck on a rock
will need every bit of that. Also. carry a snatchblock
Hydraulic: Good for light and/or short work. Long
heavy or repeated pulls will burn them up, motor
first followed by pump.
Electric: If you must do electric, stick with the
old Warn upright 8274(?) these things are beasts
& will pull trees out of the ground. They'll pull
circles around the later cheezy little planetary gear
winches. 10,000 lb Warn. Pbbbt! Yeah! right!!
I would recommend a pair of 850+ AMP batteries
and a 100+ AMP alternator. These things pull
about 350 AMPS undr full load. If you do go
electric, you'll find a good new electric and
batteries and Alt. upgrade will equal or exceed
the cost of a good PTO winch. You might as well
go top of the line even though there is a bit more
work involved.
BEST BET: Electric on one end, PTO on the other
Hope that helps you out
