Yes, it sounds like you need a tranny rebuild. There are heavier torque converters that are also better or should I say "properly" designed for our Cummins powered trucks. I dont think the price sounds bad for the whole rebuild. Your overdrive is the weak link. Remeber, if there is something-anything-behind that truck, turn the overdrive off. I am a fairly new member of the Turbo Diesel Registry and they have a great website. Id suggest you look there for torque converter recommendations and info. You can look, but you cant post if you are not a member. Good luck.
