The easiest thing to do to tighten sloppy steering is to adjust the steering gear. The sector shaft has wedge shaped teeth. The long screw sticking out of the box will push the output shaft 'wedges' deeper into the rack teeth, thereby taking up the slack in the teeth and also some in loose bushings. The adj screw is either allen head, or straight screwdriver slotted. With steerring centered, tighten snug, back our 3 turns, Test drive cautiously. A little too tight will tire your arms in 2 blocks, toooo tight and it may seize up on you- BIG HOO_HOO that. If it is way loose, like 8 turns, maybe try it half way first? Any play lessened is a good thing, even if you err on the side of looseness. Steering gear are tightest in the center, looser each way so it's easier to steer around tight corners. If you tighten it while turned to one side, it will be tooo tght in the middle. Manuals ought to have the proper specs, though they may be in inch pounds of steering effort...or maybe furlongs per fortnight?
