This is a recording:

1. Check batteries for water. Batteries older than 5 years should probably be replaced.

2. Measure battery voltage with engine off. Measure battery voltage with engine running.
Use a digital volt-meter.

Off = 12.2 volts Running = 13.8 volts (or more), per battery.

Reminder: it is nominally (which means "in name only") a 24-volt system. Technically, it is a 28-volt system. If you don't have 28 volts getting into the batteries, they will not charge adequately.

3. Check, clean thoroughly, (with wire brush) and tighten all electrical connections: Battery posts (all 4) starter, solenoid, engine and frame grounds.

4. Perform a starter current-draw test.
Most decent repair shops have a tester to do this. Takes a minute or two.

It is extremely unadvisable (and totally unnecessary) to change to a lower-voltage starter.
