I installed a Spicer auxilary three speed behind the P205 transfer case on my 1974 Chevy 1 ton 4x4. I did this 15 years ago. Under, direct, and over. The final driveline is only about 3 feet long. The overdrive gear takes a good chunk of RPM off at highway speed, the truck has 4.56 gearing. If you would forget to drop the auxilary into direct before going into 4x4 you would probably scatter the front diff. Unlock the hubs and you have 24 forward gears and 3 in reverse. The transfer case in low range the main box in compound low and the auxilary in under, and the truck will idle up a hill as slow as you can walk. With the auxilary's straight cut gears it growels like a army tank! I found one gear box in a big rig junk yard, and two more by putting a want ad in the Little Salesman heavy equipment mag. These spicer boxes where fairly common in the 1940s thru late 1950s for 1 1/2 and 2 ton trucks. You end up with a two stick like the older big rigs...... it's kinda cool too.
