Iron gears don't wear so much as chains stretch. Look closely at the drive faces of the gears, you will see slight grooves where the 'teeth' on the chain have rubbed. At that jucture, a couple thousandths of wear is only a couple thou of wear. Now, chains 'stretch'- actually, the pins wear their holes into slots, so a couple thou per pin= several degrees of slop. But even then, the 'c' shape of the individual link means that as they wear, the chain makes a larger radius around the gears, and the 'c's open up, making the teeth effectively larger in the gear 'slots', and take up some of the slop...

Bad thing about timing gears is the plastic ones that are subject to sudden failure due to age. I've seen old but low milage small block Chryslers in class C motor homes jump time at 17,000 miles. New plastic is wonderful stuff, old plastic crumbles like a stale cookie.
