It seems that a popular conversion on the WC 53's is swapping out the hatch/tailgate combo with cargo doors. The trouble with that is that the correct doors are getting harder and harder to locate, and when they are found, they go for very large $$$$'s.
I just had the opportunity to do alot of undisturbed thinking (I just drove a deuce from Portsmouth, VA to Chicago). Besides solving all the world problems, I thought about maybe welding the hatch/tailgate combo together, then cutting it in half vertically and relocating the original hinges to the sides, in other words, turning the combo into cargo doors.
Has anybody tried this before? I figure it'll be a bit of work, and I'm really not set up to do anything of this magnitude yet as I still haven't reclaimed my garage from my wife (and after getting the deuce, I don't think I'll attempt this soon either). I know with the current trend there's a matter of cutting a bit off the bottoms and re-boxing them so they'll fit the 53.
