Motors that have used leaded gasoline
have deposits on the valves and pistons. Motors run without lead appear to be
cleaner.

Lead causes the spark to be more controlled
in flame propogation. I have never heard an
adequate explanation from a chemist of how
lead controls combustion, but it worked.

I suspect lead's lubricating qualities of valves and seats is over rated.
