It is not necessary in our old, low-compression 230s. However, they were designed with leaded fuel in mind, so I bow to that fact. One option I have used to get a little lead under my valves is to throw in some 100LL avgas. The LL stands for low lead, but it still has lots of it, although they have been decreasing the amount over the years. It is to be phased out within a few years. It is 100 octane, so you wouldn't want to run it except diluted in regular unleaded auto fuel. I also put it in my mowers and other small engines in the fall to avoid having to dump it and/or rebuild carbs. in the spring. It won't rot or turn to shellac as long as the tank is sealed normally so it won't evaporate. I occasionally use it straight up in my Lingenfelter 383 V8 Jaguar XJ coupe when I want to go REAL fast. There's nothing like the smell of burning 100 octane avgas, except the smell of burning 80 octane avgas (no longer available).
