In the late 60's and early 70's my buddy and I rode Montessa's and Yamaha's at various desert enduro's in the Mojave Desert. It was always a treat to see Harvey Mushmen taking part in the races, or just riding around Stoddard Wells practicing. One weekend Harvey won, and his picture turned up in a magazine that was read by one of the Studio Executives, that was when the Studio found out that their biggest box office star was moonlighting, for Harvey was in fact Steve McQueen, the most illustrious alumni of the Boys Republic at Chino, CA.
For years Harvey secretly donated large sums of his earnings to the Boys Republic, he was a genuine good ol boy and not another sissy la la actor. Much like that other SoCal boy, Marion Morrison, whom we all know as the "Duke" Wayne.
