My friend Larry was the motor head for the movie, and says the green mustang was McQueen's own car, so Larry had to find and paint 2 others so they could be scratched and abused in some of the scenes. As for the charger, Larry said he had to have 5 of those since it got so busted up in the movie. He used to buddy around with Steve, and has some amazing stories about the guy. He really was larger than life, and was very generous and fun-loving. Too bad the cancer got Steve relatively young.
