...you know me. I don't usually give advice, but since you asked. ;^)

I have seen you buy and sell a fair amount of vehicles over the years. I think you are probably aware of this general rule: the more originality that is retained in an older special interest vehicle like ours, the more value it will have to potential buyers, if the time should come that you decide to sell it. Now, if you plan to keep it until you will it to your children, then do to it whatever it takes to make it worth more to YOU.

Nice Town Wagons are only getting harder to find and are becoming more valuable. Converting it to 4-wheel drive with readily available W-series Dodge components would be a straightforward swap. If using International Harvester components, you may be forced to make some modifications that can not easily be reversed if someone were to decide to convert the truck back to a 2-wheel drive.

The slant-6 is a very good engine for four wheeling. Actually for AVERAGE four wheeling, a 6-cylinder is usually much better than a V8. Why concentrate on horsepower when torque is what you really need. I owned a 1962 W100 Town Panel into which someone had swapped a 440 and an automatic. It was a lot of fun on the street, but about useless off road. When I sold it because of getting a job further from home, and not being able to justify only getting 6 mpg driving back and forth to work every day, it did not have near the value it would have had if left in stock condition.

Whatever you do, enjoy it. But keep in mind the flack that some here have caught when they modified a truck to their liking only to find they had a hard time selling it later on.

So to your first question in this post, I guess I would build the slant-6, but only moderately. Save the rest of the money to find Dodge axles and transfer case.

Just my two wheat pennies worth.
