That's the Chrysler/Jeep In line 6 problem, (advantage in my eyes) only 225 lbs of torque, which seems like more because it develops at near idle to about 2500 rpm, which is nearly the redline. That's where you need torque for a Jeep or truck, but the gm can run up to 5,800, not usable but very efficient for light hiway vehicles and good for passing emission tests. The key to your posting is that the 4.2 gm is developed along with other gm engine lines, that keeps the cost low. The Chrysler 4.2/4.0 was a stand alone motor line, not cost effective and certainly not enough units to warrant spending a few billion dollars on improving and modernizing the motor, thus it dies this year.
