The asbestos shoes are most likely going to be much more durable than what you get off the shelf these days. All the cracked shoes I have seen were less expensive types. your drums may be geting thin, and/or the drums coudl have hard spots. Hard spots look like fish eye in the drum. when you try to machine them you end up with little bumps all over. The only way to get rid of them is to replace drum or reverse cut them on a brake laithe, by manualy cutting the drum inward. (a trick I learned from an old guy)
