Regulator question...how do they work

I have Ferguson TO-20 (6 V pos gnd) that I replaced the regulator on. It worked ok for a month or so, then stopped charging again. It would charge 15 amps if I grounded the field so I knew the generator was ok.

I thought I could adjust the regulator but the Ferguson shop manual has no info on this, it just refers you to another manual.

I realize this regulator is a little different than ones on Power Wagons. When you take the cover off, there are two
coils and sets of points instead of three One set (#1) has thicker windings and is between the GEN and L terminals. The other one (#2) looks like it is connected to the Field terminal. The BAT
terminal is in between.

How do these regulators work...that is what do each set of points do when open or closed?

Both sets look like they could be adjusted to make the points open or close sooner. What should I do to make it charge more?

I hope someone can answer this...while a little different than PWs, the basic principles must be the same.

Thanks
