Generator question

On a 6 volt generator the two studs are different sized. Does the larger stud go to the armature and the smaller go to the field? Also I am installing a rebuilt generator on the 230. I read somewhere that there is a process to polarize the generator so as not to burn up the regulator. Is there any truth to this?
