On my M, the tank was lightly rusted, and some varnish. I used the POR-15 kit, and it looks good, but haven't poured any gas back in yet.
On Pop's PW, it had so mush sludge, etc... in the bottom they could not get it go boil out in a radiator tank. they had to cut it open like Paul did, and scrape it out, then boil it out, and weld it closed. I don't think he re-sealed it though.
