You just have to keep your eyes open all the time for automotive application engines. There are a few places down here that pull engines from delivery trucks. They are located in Georgia, Boston, and Wisconsin, but shipping to AK would kill you. There must be someone up your way pulling engines also. I also look for
Cummins Recon Engines, with low miles since Recon. Recon is a complete rebuild with everything bringing it to a new engine condition, all work is done by Cummins in house. It does take a while to find a good engine.
