I dont think this truck you bought is going to pull much better with a auto anything with the weight you are describing in the ups and downs of you're part of the country. I helped ware out 5 of those one ton chevys in three years they were all 82s to 85s 454s with four speeds and they were good trucks except for one and it ran good, just was an automatic fuel mileage under load was 5 and less would not pull good in the mountains etc ran too hot. Stick is the best way to go when moving loads. You will not make me believe different I put close to three hundred thousand miles on those trucks transporting horses all over the US, Canada. I think you wanted a chevy any way its a nice looking crapolet by the way. My brother is building a 86 chevy 4wd crewcab duelly now for a show truck
