Torque converters make more heat than trannys, when they go bad.

I've always wondered why folks blame the tranny for the heat. If it ain't slipping, it is locked up, and has only the friction of the spinning gears. But torque converters go bad in one of 2 ways- they free wheel, or they lock up. The way to tell is called a stall speed test, basically put it in gear and stand on the gas (and brake) while reading the rpms. 30 seconds max. Diesels top out at 850, gas about 1400, but check a manual for your application. Engine has to run good also. YMMV
