Chris, no pressure felt. I've got an 84 318 in the garage with the poly-v belt and everything sticks a lot further forward than on my engine.

All the info i have found, has all passenger side inlet small block water pumps as the longer or moder length. There was some one on these sites that would shorten the modern units to give the extra clearance.

In looking through the March Pulley catalog (http://www.marchperf.com/March_2005.pdf page 57), they also only show the two lengths and and signify them by the MY and the distance between the water pump flange to dampener face. the two options are: 3.75" and 4.5"
