I strongly agree, but my perspective is from the daily hours of stop and go driving on the LA freeways here. Also an automatic gives you an effective lower first gear, without clutch wear or adjustment issues.
Really the only advantages that a manual transmission has is in the ability to jump start and to "drive" on the starter in certain conditions.
Downshifting with an auto is not as precise, but the newer trannies allow for that.
