Keith -
When the fan clutches get weak, you can generally spin them. If they appear to freewheel quite a bit, not enough friction.
Or if you can reach down and hold it still while the engine is running then you know they are weak. If you see your fingers flying/cut-off, then you know they are ok.
Easy enough?
