Running the engine for a long time with the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in gear, definitely causes a lubrication problem in the transfer case because all the oil is at the bottom and without the gears turning, the bearings on the upper shaft don't get oiled. I don't if there's any M37 setup that would require this kind of operation (would need to be some kind of accessory driven from the back of the transfer case, with another box to disconnect the rear driveshaft), but some of the M35 variants use a PTO on the rear of the transfer case driven off the back end of the input shaft via a jaw clutch. To avoid lubrication problems, the PTO comes with a special add-on oil pump that pumps oil from the bottom of the transfer case up to lubricate the top shaft's bearings during PTO operations.
