Unfortunately, I am not in a position to help, but there are lots of opportunities to help. I know that the government regularly allows mission groups of all kinds in to help with clean up activities. I would recommend contacting the salvation army as you have done, the red cross as Matt suggested, or even your local churches as the church based mission organizations have tremendous contacts as well. I think that with willingness and tools(trucks) you should be able make a real impact. But, be sure you have contacts before you leave!
