I spent at least a half hour on a creeper looking over both models and that is the only chassis difference I could see. I even checked all the holes in the frame=) Virtually identical otherwise according to my observations and the 2004 technical specifiction sheets in front of me right now. It does show different standard tire size but the maximum tire/rim size is the same and it also shows 20 lb difference in the rear axle capacity. I think that is likely a misprint as they use the same axles front and rear.

We have an '01 with the 47RE which never got serviced until 75,000 miles. The first 56,000 miles it was not treated all that well some of the time. I took up 3 turns on the front band to put it in spec and it is still going at 87,000. I expect I will be pulling it for rebuild before 125,000. The 48RE is supposed to be better and stronger.
