If you're talking about the gm corporate axles, the 14 bolts are a tad stronger than Dana 60's, weaker than the Dana 70's, the 10 bolt gms are weaker than the Dana 60 AND the Chrysler Corporate axles that are under the normal M-37. I really do not know what axles and t-case the 5/4 had, but I bet Paul Cook does...= )
Be careful of bias when comparing transmissions and transfer cases between makes and models. Nearly ALL transfer cases were built by the Chrysler owned New Process Gear Division and they were used in ALL makes, so a gm is a ferd is a Dodge. Later when gm was embarassed to use these Dodge boxes, they merged Muncie/Allison with New Process to create the New Venture Company. That alliance lasted until gm bought AMGeneral and started copying the Jeep copyrighted 7 slot grill in the H-2 and H-3. Chrysler sued over the grill and gm quit the joint venture out of spite, Muncie/ Allison is now again a gm subsidery and New Venture is again a Chrylser division. Too bad because at the time of the divorce they were working on an Allison tranny for the Ram 600 Cummins.
I don't know who makes the Sears lock-outs, but Warn and/or Selectro may have. I'd say that the running gear for 5/4 is as strong as anything out there, it was good enough for the Army, and it's good enough to play in. Going to gm axles and gears would be a step down and a lot of work.
