Hardened cams can easily gouge the cam bearings. I like to put them in block upside down (like your pic), before the crank. That way one hand can reach into the crankcase and guide the cam. Now, if you can stand the block on the back end, and delicately lower cam in, it should help prevent gouges in the soft lead bearings.

Paint later, so gaskets and bolts get painted too.
