Some black smoke is expected.

Excessive black smoke is usually caused by unburned fuel.

Has the pump been turned up?

Carbon buildup on the injector nozzle will cause the fuel to dribble, and not spray when it should at (near) TDC. This will cause the piston/cylinder to not fire or mis-fire.

Was your truck running poorly, or still have the normal power you are used to?

It is pretty easy to diagnose a weak or dead cylinder due to bad or carboned injector. Simply crack each injector line open while the truck is running and listen (on have someone watch the tach) for a change in rpms. When the is no change heard, then you know which is the problme injector, or cylinder.

Similar procedure to removing spark plug wires to detect a bad / weak cylinder in a gas engine.

Did you ask if any of the valves needed adjustment, and were in fact adjusted by the mechanic? Or did the just check them?

The valve lash on the Cummins has quite a range of acceptable clearance.
