Repost-sloppy shifter

I have a sloppy shifter on my B-3 with the stock "after" non-synchro. Steve Kanavas posted several years ago that he welded in new metal on the shifter shaft where the pin rides against it and it made a tremendous difference in being able to easily find the gears, etc.
Others have given me advice about replacing the pin, but has anyone else done what Steve suggsted? Open to advice.
