I once had a homemade trailer. The fellow who built it for me went to welding school, but not to engineering school. Every time he did not know the right way to build in maximum strength, he welded on another layer of steel. I would not challenge the strength of the final result, but I soon replaced that trailer with a factory built trailer designed by a graduate engineer - that weighed almost a thousand pounds less - and carried the load very well. Actually it carried more load at the same GVW.

By the way, are you comparing frame cross sections of a Dodge 1500 to a F-150 or a F-450? Surely the Ford dealer would not have a display comparing apples to oranges. Is that a cross section of the entire length of the Ford frame? I have to ask myself why it takes so much more steel to get the same job done.
