Hey Mark,
An old timer here told me a good way to get rid of them.
If their nest is in the ground or an old stump (yellow jacket) wait till well after dark and pour gasoline down the hole and cover with a rock. No need to light it...works like a champ.
If they have the football shaped nest (hornet) wait until well after dark and then spray the heck out of the nest and its opening with long range wasp killer.
I have dispatched both types that way.
