I guess I just wondered why being locked up would cause more heat. I don't know how they accomplish the lock up, but somehow is seems to me like this would eliminate the slippage in the torque converter which should reduce friction and heat. Afterall, that is why they have the lockup in the first place isn't? The lockup gives a direct drive, reduces frictin loss in the converter and therefore reduces engine rpm at a given speed. I can see how the lockup mechanism might not be stout enough, and I can see why frequent downshifts in and out of lockup under load would not be good.

In my old van, I used to immediately disconnect the lockup if I approached a hill, or had too much headwind so it wouldn't stay in lock up. I also allowed it to lockup by letting up on the throttle so it had an easy upshift. So I can see why they might recommend what they do since many people would not drive it like I did, I just didn't understand the excess heat issue the owner's manual refers to.
