Chris sorry I missed your first question. Oil has a specific gravity less than one.(It is lighter than water) Water is assigned a specific gravity of one. Thus oil floats on water. The filter seperates the two via pressure and the engineering of the filter. It takes about 8-10 minutes to do the entire 12 quarts much slower than the full flow filter which is cleansing the larger foreign molecules. The system "Scavenges" the oil at a slower rate.
