I learned this lesson as a young boy. Now if I have to pull the cap off a hot radiator, I grab a rag, cover the cap with it, and then stand as far away from it as I can but still turn it, then I turn my face away from the radiator and proceed to remove the cap with the rag over it very very slowly....as I do it in stages, and soon as I start hearing it 'boil' I pause till it calms down and then turn the cap a little more. It may take a while doing it this way, but it is sure safer.
