Check the two sides of the carberator. I wonder if the side that feeds the hot manifold side is running real lean. I am assuming this since it sounds like you have a carter 4 bbl carb. Do a carb rebuild. Int the procees check all passages and use carb cleaner and compressed air to clean everything out.
