A word about trailer brakes....

Be sure and check withyour local motor vehicles department, because laws vary state to state as to whether both axles must have brakes or if only one does.

Two axles with brakes are great for stopping. But they slide badly and can jack knife on black ice or fresh rain (oil on pavement). A dual axle with the rear axle only with brakes allows the front unbraked wheels to act as a guide and since they do not skid, the trailer has less tendancy to jack knife.

The heavier the trailer and cargo, the more it needs brakes on all axles, so the above is only a rough guideline. On really heavy trailers and loads, most of my pals have gone to three axles, with thwo axles braked. The drawback is that they don't corner easily.
