I have been 25 years in that field. Bottom line is if you want it to work good, and do it enviromentally right you will have to pay. There is no cheap answer to not putting something on the ground. You are right mineral spirit solvent is still the best cleaner for the buck. There are alot of soap solutions out there and some do an OK job but you still have crap left to get rid of that you have cleaned off of things. You still don't want to put that on the ground. Your best bet is to rent a parts cleaner from a company that recycles the solvent. I know it's costly for a hobbiest. Just do it when you know you will be using it alot. Then send it back. You can buy mineral spirits solvent at some petroleum jobbers for a little more than diesel fuel. Some let you bring in 5 gallon containers and you don't have to buy a whole drum. The brand name stuff in pails at the parts store is the same stuff with a different smell added but a lot more expensive. Save the dirty stuff till you rent again and send it back when they pick that up. It will be the same material.
